A $15 pre-filter protects an $800 membrane, a deferred pre-filter change is the most frequent cause of early membrane death. Budget pre-filters every 3–6 months and a membrane clean at 6–12 months, and factor a spare-parts kit, pre-filters, membrane, and through-hull fittings, into the first order if your vessel will run remotely.
